I’m new to Internet Marketing. Will attending a seminar or conference help me get started? Or will I get lost in the sea of information at the event?

I think the most difficult thing about starting in internet marketing is the over-supply of ‘experts’ on the topic. There are so many specialists in different areas of IM – but the thing is YOU don’t need to be a specialist.
In answer to your question I would say that you definitely should go to any internet marketing conference or seminar that comes your way. Take in as much information as you can, and wherever possible research the speaker before you go (don’t just rely on the event’s blurb about them). Visit their sites and see how much information they actually share (not sell!). I think this proves that they are actually doing the stuff they are on stage talking about, they are living it.
If you find someone that resonates with you, pay particular attention to what they are saying. When starting out, listen to more of a generalist, and he or she will be able to give you an overview of how it all works. Don’t get bogged down in specifics, like taking a course in PPC or SEO. You need to know how to put the game plan together, know the rules, before looking at different strategies and tactics.
Most important though – take notes, and then condense them that night. In that way you can extract the key points, and reveal who was delivering real information, and who was just trying to make your mouth water by showing pictures of the mansions they live in, the planes and cars they own, and the famous people they have been photographed with!
